Abstract

A new time-saving and efficient methodology to measure the dielectric strength of silicone rubbers has been developed. The core element of this methodology - the new test facility - allows easily preparing and handling a silicone-sheet specimen. The technique is very suitable for liquid silicone rubbers with very high viscosity, which are widely used as insulating material for high-power cables accessories. Moreover, the new methodology can be better used for dielectric breakdown tests in some other cases, such as testing with embedded electrode. The developed technique is also suitable for routine tests in materials research laboratories. The AC 50 Hz dielectric strength values of four different types of silicone rubbers were evaluated. The experimental results were very well statistically validated on the basis of Weibull statistics. This research may be useful for improvement of a standard test method for dielectric strength measurement of silicone rubbers.
