- Abstract
The main goal of this research was to determine the influence of temperature and pressure on the development of partial discharges (PD) in sealed power transformers. A test vessel was developed to reproduce the conditions in a compact power transformer, which is commonly used in wind turbines. The electrode assembly resembles the structure of the high voltage winding in such a transformer. As insulation liquids a synthetic ester and a silicone fluid are investigated together with an aramid paper. This combination is typically used and allows high operating temperatures, but many of these transformers failed in the field. Therefore it was investigated how the PD inception and extinction voltage change over the temperature in an open system and how they are influenced by a change of the pressure of the gas cushion at different temperatures in a closed system. Furthermore dissolved and undissolved gases were evaluated after a stress with partial discharges over 72 hours. The obtained results show that the PD inception and extinction voltages are strongly influenced by temperature, pressure and type of gas used for the gas cushion.
