Abstract

The lifespan of a transformer is believed to majorly be determined by the state of the cellulose. Since direct paper sampling is an intrusive approach and used usually as post-mortem investigation, various aging indicators alternatively are examined to indirectly estimate the degree of polymerization (DP-value) of cellulose; amongst furan compounds which exclusively produced by cellulose deterioration. However, furan analysis is carried out for more than 30 years and the description of the measurement technique is provided comprehensively in IEC 61198 and ASTM D-5837, there is still no standardized interpretation schema and guidance to correlate the furan content with DP-value. In this regard, questions arises regarding uncertainties associated with estimation of the paper condition based on the furan concentration. Therefore, this contribution aims at finding some influential factors in generation and degradation of furanic derivate leading to unusual behaviour in accumulation of furanic compounds. This study contributes not to improve the already proposed interpretation formals rather it underlines the corresponding uncertainties resulting from factors as different arrangements of the insulation system, the use of various mineral oil-based insulating fluids and the hermetically sealed or free-breathing transformer preservation system.
